2020, Journal of Investigative DermatologyCitation Excerpt :Reported prevalence rates of HS vary from 0.03% to 4% of the population, with female predominance (Jemec et al., 1996; Kirsten et al., 2020; Revuz et al., 2008; Vazquez et al., 2013). Obesity, smoking, and mechanical friction are well-established risk factors associated with the development of HS (Dessinioti et al., 2017; Fabbrocini et al., 2016). It has gradually been accepted that HS is an immunologic disease of the hair follicle, immunohistologically characterized by perifollicular inflammation predominantly involving neutrophils and macrophages in the acute phase of the lesion.
