    Altogether, these data indicate that ColXVII acts as a tumor inducer during epithelial carcinogenesis. In agreement, only few junctional epidermolysis bullosa patients with COL17A1 deficiency have been described who developed SCC.29 In contrast, patients with deficiency of the basement membrane compound collagen VII are highly susceptible to develop skin SCC, in particular in patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.30
