Patients typically lack a family or personal history of melanoma. Spitz nevi are uncommon in children of darker skin types,24 and pediatric cases demonstrate no gender predilection. Because children under age 10 are more likely to have typical benign Spitz nevi, whereas lesions of older pediatric patients more commonly demonstrate atypia, it is important to be familiar with indications for watchful monitoring.10–27
